Drogba is ‘still haunting’ Arsenal – Wenger
With Olivier Giroud unlikely to feature in Arsenal’s opening Premier League game of the season against Liverpool in two weeks’ time and Danny Welbeck ruled out until February, Wenger is keen on signing another striker, especially given Theo Walcott’s alarming slump in form that continued with a poor display in San Jose.
But the Gunners managed to secure a win on American soil with four minutes remaining after Chuba Akpom converted Nacho Monreal’s late cross.
Akpom netted the victor for the English Premier League side in the 87th minute from close range, following a delightful cross from the left side by full-back Nacho Monreal. “But I believe we know what we have to do”, Wenger was quoted as saying by The Guardian on Thursday.
The former Bolton centre-back was paired with Krystian Bielik, 18, in a youthful backline tasked with keeping at bay a formidable MLS All Star frontline that included David Villa, Kaka and former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.
“I must say he looked composed, mastered the pressure well, wasn’t nervous and he reads the game very well”.
“At the moment I have not too many attacking options in terms of experienced players”, Wenger said.
“Personally, I believe no matter what you do, it’s never enough”. So it was good to see we are in good shape.
“Yes, yes. He always hurt us, and he continues”.
“For me it’s for fun because I scored against [former Chelsea, now Arsenal goalkeeper] Petr [Cech], but the result matters more than my goal or my own performance”.
“I hate losing. So for fun, I will have gun with Petr because I scored”.
Forward Gonzalo Higuain was also heavily linked by British media with a move to Arsenal before he joined Juventus, while Wenger’s only forward signing in the current transfer window has been 21-year-old Japan worldwide Takuma Asano. “At half-time, I was thinking ‘He’s still haunting us, even in the United States!'”
“I think you need to buy players you need, you need to buy players that will improve the team and not to buy players just for buying”. But he already killed me and said “This time I give you the goal”.
