Drug lord ‘Chapo’ secretly met USA actor before capture
Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is made to face the press as he is escorted to a helicopter in handcuffs by Mexican soldiers and marines at a federal hangar in Mexico City, Mexico, Friday, Jan. 8, 2016.
Guzman was recaptured on Friday in northwest Mexico six months after a brazen prison-break.
“El Chapo” faces drug trafficking charges connected to his cartel in the US and it is believed the Mexican Attorney General’s office is looking to establish the path to extradition as soon as possible.
“He was interested in seeing the story of his life told on film, but would entrust its telling only to Kate”, he wrote.
Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez said on Friday that authorities were able to locate Guzman after he met with actors and producers in the hope of making a biopic about himself.
“I know one day I will die”, Guzman said.
Penn also recounted how Guzman voiced interest in the movie business and how it works, but was unimpressed with its financial yield.
Another Mexican government source said authorities were considering whether to investigate Penn and Del Castillo, possibly for money laundering.
“The law will decide what happens”, the official said.
Guzman has been indicted in at least five USA cities for alleged crimes that helped him build a drug-trafficking empire and amass a personal fortune that Forbes magazine estimated to be $1 billion.
“The Chicago Crime Commission demands that Guzman is immediately turned over to American authorities”, said J.R. Davis, President and Chairman of the Chicago Crime Commission.
“Unfortunately, where I grew up, there was and there is no other way to survive”, Guzman said.
Corrects that Sinaloa is his home state.
“Given that “El Chapo” has already escaped from Mexican prison twice, this third opportunity to bring him to justice can not be squandered”, Rubio said. That’s a sharp reversal from the government’s position after his last capture in 2014. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to comment.
Penn added: “We are the consumers, and as such, we are complicit in every murder, and in every corruption of an institution’s ability to protect the quality of life for citizens of Mexico and the United States that comes as a result of our insatiable appetite for illicit narcotics”.
The interview by Penn led authorities to El Chapo’s whereabouts as Mexico’s government closely followed the actor’s movements, reports our sister paper the Daily Mirror.
Based on the judge’s ruling, the Foreign Ministry will then have 20 days to reach agreements for Guzman’s extradition – a step that can also be appealed by his lawyers, according to the statement.
A television journalist points to a weapon found in a drain from where Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman escaped before being captured at Jiquilpan Boulevard in Los Mochis, in Sinaloa.
Penn said Guzman sent engineers to Germany for three months of training on how to avoid problems when excavating near a low-lying watertable beneath the prison where he was being held in order to flawless the audacious escape plan.
When asked about whether he is responsible for the high level of drug addiction in the world, Guzman purportedly responds: “No, that is false, because the day I don’t exist, it’s not going to decrease in any way at all”.
One of Guzman’s attorneys, Juan Pablo Badillo, vowed to take the case up to the Supreme Court if necessary.
