DSU to host celebration in observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., slain Civil Rights leader and pre-eminent advocate of non-violence, will be remembered on his birthday at two Martin Luther King Day events in Kings Mountain Monday.
The Dixie State campus will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. The 56-minute documentary explores Dr. King’s connection with labor rights and his last hours in Memphis.
Just as it did a year ago, “Walk the Talk” will serve as the theme. The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is not a day off, but a day on.
The celebration begins Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 6:30 p.m. with readings and displays of art by finalists and winners of the annual Martin Luther King (MLK) Community Coalition Art and Essay Contest. The organizations, with the help of faculty, staff and student volunteers, will create a memory garden by the Martin Luther King Jr. light post.

“On the MLK holiday we will gather to reflect upon and celebrate the spirit-filled, justice-oriented work of King”, said Riverside Pastor Rev. Vicky Stifter.
I march today to symbolize the achievements attained as a result of the changes that are directly attributable to the pains and agony experienced by our forefathers and mothers who carved out of the civil rights areas our paths to successes.
Blackburn says sometimes people still wonder, with all the turmoil in the world, if we are still continuing King’s legacy. Day of Service on January 18.
Following the rally, Irving elementary students are invited to participate in a Bike Safety Rodeo from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. The bike rodeo will educate children about a variety of techniques, principles and maintenance aspects related to bicycle safety.
The celebration is free of charge and open to the public.
