DU portal crashes on day 1 of admissions, chaos in colleges
Delhi University’s first cut-off 2016 list is too high, beyond the reach of thousands of students, regardless of how they performed in board exams. Ramjas College has announced a cut-off of 98 percent for entry into Political Science (Honours). This year while no college has come up with a 100 percent cut-off, the fact that even in humanities courses a student is expected to get 95-98 percent marks which only speaks of the cut-throat completion that students have to face to get a seat in any of the DU college.
According to Rajeev Kunwar, secretary of the democratic teachers’ front of DU, though the cut-off hasn’t touched 100 percent this year, there has not been a dip in the cut-offs but has actually increased this year. Ramjas College has announced the highest cut-off among the DU colleges.
Apart from Sanskrit (Honours) there is hardly any course where a student who has secured less than 90 percent can expect a seat, in any of the good colleges of the Delhi University. This may prohibit some students to take admission in their preferred college and/or course. Originally scheduled for 30th June release, DU first cut off list 2016 was published online late on the night of 29th June, around 11 pm.
Over 2.5 lakh students have already applied for admission to the various colleges, which for obvious reasons, is fantastic.
College of Vocational Studies and Kirori Mal were asking for scores as high as 98% for the BCom (Honours) course. Last year, it was a total of 2,91,819 while this year, it has been only 2,50,914 for the total of 54,000 seats in 63 colleges. The second highest cut off is declared for BSc (Electronics). If they are eligible, they can select the college and the course as per the options available.
“Among all 1,29,910 applications are from male candidates and 1,20,295 from female candidates, while 15 applicants have applied under other gender category”, the statement said. The varsity received near about 2.5 lakh applications this year as the application process was made completely online this year. These off-campus colleges are now keeping up with the on-campus colleges as the number of registrations has increased rapidly. This is the first time the university introduced the online admission procedure for undergraduate courses.
Under the sports quota, there are 10,382 applicants, and 8,273 under the ECA quota.
Also, this year, the applicants under the Children of War Widows and Kashmiri migrant quota also filled the centralised form.
