Duchess of Cambridge wears Princess Diana’s favourite tiara to diplomatic
Kate wore her hair in an up swept style with diamond chandelier drop earrings and an ice blue frock believed to be a dress designed by Alexander McQueen and one previously worn by the Duchess.
The tiara contains swinging pearls hanging from 19 diamond arches capped with lover’s knots, some of which were composed by Queen Mary’s jewels from her collection. That was just the third time she opted for, as Mariah Carey would put it, “a tiara moment”.
The tiara was originally made for Queen Mary in 1914.
Tuesday evening’s white-tie Diplomatic Reception is the main ambassadorial social event of the year in London. Because of its association with Diana – and of course its Cambridge name – this lovely design seems very fitting for Kate to wear to the important event.
But it was her decision to wear Diana’s favourite tiara that took the breath away from seasoned royal watchers.
Kate Middleton was last seen wearing the Lotus Flower Tiara in October when Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Madame Pang Liyuan, were visiting Great Britain.
The Queen Mother often wore the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara as a young woman before handing it down to her youngest daughter, Princess Margaret. She first wore the royal accessory at her 2011 wedding.
The Middleton’s “were happy to dine publicly” in the London restaurant but were also given a private area to dine so that they have a good time away from inquisitive people, Irish Independent reported.
William’s mother Diana, Princess of Wales received this paticular tiara as a wedding gift from the Queen in 1981. “This is largely down to the generosity and support of donors, many of whom are here tonight at this, the seventh Christmas carol service”, Prince William said during the annual celebration which is a way for Prince William, Prince Harry, and Kate Middleton to kick-start their Christmas season. It features 739 brilliant and 149 baton diamonds.
