Ducks goaltender John Gibson signs $6.9 million contract extension
ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Ducks have signed goalie John Gibson to a three-year contract extension, the club announced Monday.
The deal carries a $2.3 million AAV with the annual salary increasing from $1.5 million to $2.1 million and then $3.3 million in the final year, according to the Orange County Register’s Eric Stephens.
Gibson went 13-8-0 in 23 regular-season contests last season with a 2.60 goals-against average, a.914 save percentage and one shutout.
Starter Frederik Andersen is set to become a restricted free agent next summer, while backup Anton Khudobin will be unrestricted. That list includes standout defensemen Sami Vatanen, Hampus Lindholm and Simon Despres, who form the core of a mobile and promising defense. “Just going to play, and play my best”. He also spent half the season in the AHL, though, where the former Team USA World Juniors star posted a.935 SV% with the Norfolk Admirals in 11 regular season games. The last one isn’t a fond memory: He was pulled from Game 7 of the Ducks’ second-round loss to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings. I want young players who want to stay and be a part of this organization.
Gibson’s signing shows how much the Ducks are looking towards the future and whom they trust will be the fill-in at goaltender.
“I’m sure with every decision they make, it’s for the betterment of the team, so you’ve got to respect that”, Gibson said. Before, I was a little bit up in the air because of so many things that could happen.
“It’s exciting, but now I’ve got training camp and worry about this team first”, Gibson said.
