Ducks sign former Rangers forward Carl Hagelin
The Ducks and their new winger finally came together on their contract as the team on Friday announced a four-year deal for the former New York Rangers forward. He was a restricted free agent coming off of a two-year, $4.5 million contract.
According to the Orange County Register’s Eric Stephens, the deal carries an average annual value of $4 million.
Hagelin became a restricted free agent July 1.
The 6-foot, 186-pound Hagelin appeared in all 82 games last season with the Rangers, recording 35 points (17 goals, 18 assists) and a plus-18 rating.
Hagelin was acquired by the Ducks in June in a trade with the New York Rangers. “They’re committed to me, and I’m committed to them”. “It’s an exciting time and a great opportunity to do big things. I’m extremely motivated”, Hagelin said. Hagelin will make $1.6 million more a year in the deal than he made last year.
With the Rangers, Hagelin recorded 58 goals and 72 assists in 266 games. He helped the Rangers reach the postseason for the last four seasons, including their 2013-14 appearance in the Stanley Cup Final against the Kings.
When asked if Hagelin is essentially a Beleskey replacement, since the latter was likely not going to re-sign with Anaheim at that point, Murray noted they’re different players.
A native of Sweden, he won silver at the 2014 Olympics and silver at the 2008 World Junior Championship, his first major global tournament.
At the draft, general manager Bob Murray noted Hagelin adds a faster element to the game than then-unrestricted free agent forward Matt Beleskey.
