Duffy second to Cubs’ Bryant in NL Rookie voting
313 (122-390) with 22 doubles, four triples, 12 home runs, 51 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 99 games, becoming the first Indians rookie with at least 10 steals, 10 homers, 20 doubles, 100 hits and.
Correa received 17 first-place votes and 13 second-place votes, for a total of 124 points. Infielder Matt Duffy of the San Francisco Giants finished second, followed by infielder Jung Ho Kang of the Pittsburgh Pirates, pitcher Noah Syndergaard of the NY Mets, and first baseman Justin Bour of the Miami Marlins.
Correa is the second Astros player to win the award, the other being Jeff Bagwell, who won in 1991, when the Astros were in the National League. They finished third in the AL Central at 81-80.
As Baseball America’s No. 1 prospect heading into the season, Bryant did all this with a huge target on his back. Correa hit. 279 with 22 home runs, 68 RBI and 22 doubles for Houston and he also played strong defense at shortstop.
“It’s been just an incredible year for me”, Bryant said after the result was announced on Major League Baseball Network.
Correa did not join the Astros until his June 8 call-up, but he hit the ground running.
Though not considered as good defensively as Duffy, his overwhelming offensive stats – including 77 bases on balls – made Bryant the unanimous choice of the voters (two from each National League city).
The Major League Baseball season is officially over, but the awards are starting to trickle in. Bryant helped the Cubs make it to the playoffs this season and he ended up getting all 30 first-place votes.
“There is a way to top this year”, Bryant said on a BBWAA conference call.
“I went out there and played as hard as I can with a little chip on my shoulder and things turned out great”. “He wants to be the best player in the game”.
