Dustin Brown loses at Wimbledon 2 days after beaing Nadal
She was going for it and playing more aggressively.
But Kvitova’s focused approach completely disappeared at that point and Jankovic recovered to level at 4-4.
“Probably would have been smart not to play here, but I couldn’t pass on Wimbledon”. Yet Wimbledon has always been like a warm womb for her, nurturing. Now, thanks to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over ex- finalist Sabine Lisicki, she is through to the last 16 here, and on Monday will be a strong favourite to reach the quarter-finals when she takes on the unseeded Romanian Monica Niculescu, who beat Kristyna Pliskova 6-3, 7-5 and has yet to play a seed. She hasn’t been a serious contender in five years.
Kvitova banged down 10 aces overall, one of them coming off a second serve, and Nara found it impossible to read her lefty deliveries.
Come the final game of the match, the Czech’s forehand deserted her completely.
But that’s the way of sports. Especially in that third set, you just have to stay focused and play one point at a time.
Jelena Jankovic admits that she is “really, really happy” to have knocked defending champion Petra Kvitova out of Wimbledon.
“I’m happy with my tournament”, Brown said in a post-match news conference. Suddenly, Kvitova was serving to stay in the set. The 2014 champion then hit two unforced errors to crash out of the tournament whilst her victor went down on the grass in happiness and disbelief. That was in stark contrast to Jankovic, who’d battled back to 4-4. He was broken in the 10th game of the first set, gave back an early break in the second and lost his serve twice in the fourth. “I was trying to calm down a little bit”. But if Im hitting my spots, its quite effective, Jankovic said.
It didn’t translate onto Centre Court upon her return and she continued to come undone.
She broke in the fourth game of the match and, unloading some booming serves, eased through the set in a businesslike 29 minutes. And just like that, Kvitova was gone.
“Playing on grass is very hard for me”.
With No. 1 seed Serena Williams struggling after her third-round win and facing Venus Williams next, it appeared Kvitova had an opportunity. “He said the shoulder was like a machine gun going off when he laid on top of me”. “That’s it”. You know, I was a little bit better at the end.
The holder’s decision-making let her down, highlighted by the decision to lodge a challenge when leading 30-15 on Jankovic’s serve at 4-4 in the second set only to discover her opponent’s shot was in. I mean, it’s unbelievable. I was waiting, as well, for my chances to strike and to kind of attack as much as I could when I was returning. In terms of break point conversions, though it was Kvitova who had better margin of conversion – 50% to 38%, it was Jankovic who made most incursions on her opponent’s serve. I don’t know how to explain. Self-deprecating giggle here.
Brown joins Lukas Rosol, Steve Darcis and Nick Kyrgios who all lost their next match at Wimbledon after knocking out Nadal over the last four years.
Jankovic took advantage of the sluggish Kvitova and dominated the third set.
Kvitova was the favorite in the lower bracket of the draw.
“After that I knew I could do it. I was fighting”. I’m still young at heart. I’ve been feeling good from the beginning of the grass season.
“It s a 90-kilo guy lying on top of me so it s not that pleasant”.
