Dustin Johnson wins the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
Johnson didn’t miss a beat from Oakmont to Firestone, powering and putting his way to a 4-under 66 on Sunday to win the Bridgestone Invitational for his second straight victory, making him the player to beat heading into the British Open in two weeks.
He drives it great. His wedge game has been his biggest improvement.
Is it really that simple? “If I can keep driving it well, I think I have a good chance tomorrow”. “The best shot, the only good shot I hit all day”.
“All I look at it is carry numbers, just so I have more of a feel when I’m on the course and playing”, Johnson said.
Day, the world’s No. 1 player, was tied for the lead when he hooked a 3-wood off the tee on the par-5 16th, hit across the fairway and tried to bend a shot around the pond. He smashed a third shot into a water hazard on his way to a double bogey, falling to four-under. He had a one-shot lead and didn’t hit a green in regulation over the last six holes. He finished one shot ahead of fellow American Scott Piercy.
Jason Day has imploded to hand Dustin Johnson the World Golf Championships event in Ohio. “I felt like I rolled the ball really well with the putter today.” t was his second win in succession, the belated arrival of a megastar of the game. Cameras caught him after he closed with a 66 on the phone with her saying, “I found him”.
It was Henderson’s third career win, all coming in the Northwest.
Day eventually finished in a three-way tie for third alongside Matt Kuchar and Jordan Spieth, who Johnson has usurped as world number two by a mere 0.002 ranking points.
Day, meanwhile, carded a one-under 69 for a five-under total of 205 as he recovered from successive bogeys at the end of the front nine by sinking a 35-foot eagle on the 15th.
Two starts, two victories, and now No. 2 in the world.
He won the Cadillac Championship at Doral previous year, and the HSBC Champions in Shanghai in the fall of 2013.
Both Johnson and Spieth (who finished T3 at the WGC Bridgestone) have now also secured their spots on the American Ryder Cup team, according to a tweet posted this morning by Team USA. I really had two bad holes.
What it means: Get used to it – any talk of a “Big Whatever” is going to have to include DJ, who now has won his last two starts. “I feel like my game is where it has been all year”.
There is some truth to that. He has only three finishes outside the top 20 in the past year on the PGA Tour. Ever since the first time I ever went over there, I’ve always enjoyed it and I feel like I play pretty well over there. “I plan on playing 18 holes at least on Sunday, maybe Sunday and Monday, and then nine and nine like I do for the other major championships”, the 22-year-old Texan said.
