Dynamo Kiev to play behind closed doors following racist attacks on Chelsea
UEFA ordered Dynamo Kiev to play two home games in an empty stadium after racist attacks on fans at a Champions League match.
The European governing body have now announced that charges have been brought against the Ukrainian club for racist behaviour, crowd disturbances and blocking stairways during the match.
Piara Powar, executive director of Fare, told the Guardian last month: “This bad incident reflects numerous continuing realities of football in central and eastern Europe”.
The club has been in trouble with UEFA for racist behaviour in the past.
Defender Miguel Layun has admitted Porto will have to show courage in their do-or-die Champions League clash with Chelsea after going down to Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday.
Dynamo, trying to avoid its 11th straight group exit since it last advanced 16 years ago, was on the ropes for the first 20 minutes but rebounded and went ahead through Yarmolenko’s 35th-minute penalty.
Dynamo’s first match behind closed doors will be against Maccabi Tel Aviv in December, with the second match coming in either the Champions League second round or the next phase of the Europa League, depending on where they finish in their group.
“In the second half we should have played more with our heads, not with our hearts, so we were not able to surpass an opponent that, in the end, was a deserved victor”.
