Eagles agree to 2-year deal with QB Bradford
The Eagles never wanted Bradford to reach free agency, especially after Washington placed the franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins on Tuesday, guaranteeing him that $19.95 million salary for next season. Now, the fun begins.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the two-year deal is worth $36 million, with $26 million in guaranteed money. “Don’t want to get into any specifics about anything, but for us, we have to build the team”.
Bradford was acquired by the Eagles in a trade with the then-St. They talked to Bradford’s agent, Tom Condon, in Indianapolis last week, and reportedly upped their offer to the soon-to-be free agent. The Rams originally selected the Oklahoma product with the first overall pick in the 2010 draft. Whether the Eagles have reason to be excited about the depth chart is another matter. Who else will play quarterback for them in 2016 and beyond?
But even if the Eagles had gone 7-9 with Foles, they would still be better off right now than they are.
If he gets hurt again, however, the Eagles still have Mark Sanchez to fill in under center. The outcome of the meeting remains unknown but it certainly didn’t end in the Eagles deciding to use their $20m franchise tag which is probably for the best. Bradford struggled early, but improved as the season went on. The team knew what was coming this offseason – they must have. But free agency can do amusing things to a lot of people. He had a passer rating of 86.4.
The consensus? It’s a desperate move by the Eagles.
It’s possible the Eagles could let Bradford test the market and bring him back if there’s a weak market for his services. With Bradford, at least they have the potential of a player who could turn the corner.
