EAGLES CAMP: Alonso, Bradford and Ertz out vs. Colts
Instead, Kelly focused on the opportunity presented for several of the team’s tight ends who figured to be lower on the depth chart before the news about Ertz’s injury. He didn’t practice much after and then sat out Thursday’s session.
Chip Kelly revealed quite a bit in his final press conference before the Eagles preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
With Bradford, it seems that Eagles coach Chip Kelly is just being cautious, wanting to get the QB with the twice-repaired left ACL another week of practice reps before sending him into live action.
In the long run, the bigger news coming out of NovaCare yesterday probably was that tight end Zach Ertz has undergone a surgical procedure on a “core muscle”, believed to be a partial groin tear, and has been ruled out of the entire preseason. Ertz is expected to be ready for the season opener September 14 at the Atlanta Falcons. I think he can go.
“Sam will not play”, said Kelly. “We’re just taking him along slowly”. The Ravens and Eagles will train together starting Wednesday and ending Friday.
The Eagles also waived outside linebacker Brandon Hepburn (abdominal) and defensive end B.J. McBryde (foot) after reaching injury settlements and signed free agent defensive end Alfy Hill, a former Winston-Salem State standout who was originally signed by the Arizona Cardinals after a tryout.
“Kiko is fine”, Kelly said. Kelly said that the team hasn’t even put Alonso through the NFL concussion protocol yet, because, the coach said: “We know what type of football player he is, but that’s not something you need to rush him back into doing anything”.
