Eagles CEO says Chip Kelly didn’t push to keep coaching job
“As I watched this season unfold, I determined that it was time to make a change”, Eagles Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Lurie said in an official statement via the team’s website.
Two 10-6 seasons had given Lurie evidence Kelly was worthy of being in charge of personnel, despite the March, 2014, ditching of wide receiver DeSean Jackson that would become the first example of a unsafe Kelly flaw: his misguided notion that schemes, not talent, win in the NFL. “And sometimes it doesn’t work out”. “In this case, they didn’t”.
Ed Marynowitz, Vice President of Player Personnel, was also released. “That’s the direction we’ll go”.
“I have made a decision to release Chip Kelly this evening”, Lurie said.
The Philadelphia Eagles abruptly fired Kelly on Tuesday night, five days before the final game of the 2015 regular season.
“The end result was mediocrity”, Lurie said.
“It was a clear and important decision that had to be made”, Lurie told an overflow media gathering at the NovaCare Center Wednesday.
Now Kelly can go become coach of the Tennessee Titans and run his uptempo spread offense, which can be a success in the National Football League, with his former OR quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Still, even if the Titans want Kelly and even if Kelly wants to stay in the NFL, there will presumably be other offers, especially from the deep pockets of some bigger college football programs.
“I spoke to Gus Bradley today to confirm to him that he will continue as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016”. In the next two seasons, he led the team to records of 10-6 and 10-6 with Nick Foles and Mark Sanchez as the team’s QBs. He arrived in Philadelphia facing high expectations and nearly immediately lived up to them.
The Chip Kelly revolution ended before it ever really began. Using their no-huddle offense, the Eagles amassed 443 yards and won the game, 33-27. The Eagles lost at home to New Orleans in the playoffs and missed the postseason in 2014 following a 9-3 start.
Kelly decided at that point that he needed a new quarterback.
Kelly responded with an aggressive overhaul of the Eagles’ roster. Lurie said Kelly didn’t lose the locker room, but without criticizing Kelly he also did speak at length about finding the right leader for his team, which seemed to indicate Kelly wasn’t that leader.
The Eagles will face the Giants in a game where the two are already eliminated from the playoffs.
Tampa Bay at Carolina, 3:25 p.m. They responded with a victory over McCoy and the Buffalo Bills.
Meanwhile, Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart ran on a treadmill Tuesday, the most activity he has seen since spraining his foot more than three weeks ago. Murray carried the ball just eight times in the game.
“Another job that isn’t even open, but Jim Caldwell is hardly safe, with the Lions wanting to hire a new GM and let that person decide Caldwell’s fate”. Lurie later explained that Kelly had a “requirement to sort of have a football guy that he was comfortable with in terms of helping him day to day and minute by minute”.
Kelly compiled a 26-21 record.
Lurie called it one of the most disppointing seasons he has ever endured as an owner.
