Eagles end 3-game skid as Patriots lose back-to-back games
But for the first time since 1999, the Eagles have finally beaten that team that ended their 2004 season with a loss in the Super Bowl. Brady’s 1-yard scoring streak trimmed the Eagles’ lead to 35-28. Injuries have finally caught up to the Patriots, who started the season with 10 straight wins.
The Patriots made it close.
With three minutes left in the game, Brady reignited Patriots hopes with a 25-yard pass to James White on fourth-and-12. Ebner, who has played rugby in his past, tried a drop kick that didn’t work out and then delivered an onside kick late that was batted out of bounds by Philadelphia. His two TDs were key, but so was his third-and-11 strike to blocking wide receiver Riley Cooper just before the 2-minute warning, which gave the Birds control of their fate.
The New England comeback was witnessed by about half the crowd. After back-to-back-to-back embarrassing losses, Eagles fans needed something to smile about. The typically mild-mannered signal caller said he felt the Eagles could make a playoff run and urged his teammates to play fearlessly.
The Raiders (5-7) were leading by six points and driving for more when Carr’s mistakes changed the tide of the game and helped keep the Chiefs (7-5) in the lead in the AFC wild-card race. But on the next play, Brady lobbed the ball into the end zone and it was picked off by Byron Maxwell.
It was uh, so deflating, if you will.
The game was tied at the intermission.
“When they kicked that first one to me today our special teams coach came up to me and said ‘they are going to give us one today, ‘” Sproles said.
That’s what happened, and the rest of the Eagles echoed his message. It was ruled an incompletion.
CHIEFS 34, RAIDERS 20 (at Oakland, Calif.) – The Chiefs’ Jeremy Maclin had two touchdowns catches after fourth-quarter interceptions and Tyvon Branch returned a third interception from Derek Carr for the game-clinching score.
An area that’s usually a strength for the Patriots turns into a weakness.
When the Patriots were forced to punt on their next possession, Sproles broke free for an 83-yard touchdown. The collision left them flat on their faces at the 35-yard line.
Apparently the Eagles never read that script, shocking New England with a 35-28 win.
Sam Bradford only managed to throw for 120 passing yards in the win, but did connect with Jordan Matthews and Jordan Ertz for touchdowns. It cut the deficit to 14-7 with 4:04 left in the first half.
On the Maragos punt block that led to a 24-yard scoop and score by Najee Goode at the end of the first half, the former burst through the line extremely clean. On that play, Patriots punter Ryan Allen kicked it toward the left sideline.
The Patriots were stunned.
Although the Patriots did give up their share of rushing yards in the loss-Eagles running back Darren Sproles had 66 of Philadelphia’s 128 yards on the ground-Belichick’s defenders allowed a mere 248 total yards of offense on the afternoon.
The Eagles were reeling and would be lucky to escape without being embarrassed by the powerhouse Patriots.
But Brady was sacked and New England stalled at their 38 with 15 seconds remaining. Brady got up and glared at Curry, who trotted off the field. It’s great when a coach lets you be aggressive.
Then the old Eagles offense showed up. Gronkowski demands so much attention on defense that I doubt the Eagles’ defense would of been able to contain him.
The Jaguars (4-8) failed at the chance to sweep Tennessee for the first time since 2005.
Then ason Peters had a false start.
Brady marched the Patriots 80 yards for a score, the last four on a throw to White.
The Eagles responded by driving 80 yards on 12 plays.
He is now third on the NFL’s all-time touchdown list, trailing Peyton Manning (539) and Brett Favre (508).
That only woke up the Eagles.
