Eagles fire Chip Kelly
Add in the fact that former players like LeSean McCoy came out and voiced their displeasure with Kelly, and it’s become apparent that the only thing he did was take a sledgehammer to his career in the Eagles’ organization.
The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t wait for Black Monday to make the first stunning coaching move of the season.
“We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward”, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement.
Pat Shurmur, the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, will serve as interim head coach in the team’s final game of the season against the New York Giants on Sunday. The Eagles went 10-6 in each of Kelly’s first two seasons, winning the NFC East in 2013.
Lurie will hold a noon press conference on Wednesday to discuss his decision and the coaching search that will be led by Lurie, team president Don Smolenski and executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman.
January 6 Kelly turns down the Eagles job, decides to stay at Oregon. What it should be remembered for is a lesson on why coaches should be careful when they ask for complete control. Kelly also traded for a quarterback that didn’t really fit his system. The Cleveland Browns hoped to hire Kelly three years ago, and could be looking for a new coach soon.
It’s an abrupt end to a fascinating coaching tenure in Philadelphia that started with so much promise.
Since he was sacked by the Eagles, and didn’t ask to leave, he can go to any team that wants him – either in the National Football League or college. The team you’ll hear the most about over the next several days will be the Tennessee Titans. College is certainly a possibility, but not if Kelly has his way. He alienated some of his players, though the only ones who spoke out against him did it after they were gone.
Shorr-Parks later added that other players found out about the firing from “Twitter, reporters, and other teammates”.
