Eagles fire head coach Chip Kelly
That would indicate pretty severe disillusionment on the part of Lurie, who hasn’t talked to reporters since September 11, when he said of Kelly: “He’s an excellent coach in this league”.
A little more than three months later, Lurie evidently changed his opinion. And sometime Tuesday – or maybe in the last couple of days or weeks or even earlier – Lurie decided he no longer believed in what Kelly was selling. Kelly was given control of personnel moves last January and overhauled the roster in a series of questionable moves. If Kelly was simply a mess as a general manager (or whatever his exact title was), the Eagles could have attempted to bring in someone with more personnel experience this off-season. By mid-season, if not sooner, it was obvious that Murray was a bad fit for the Eagles’ running style.
Arizona received 10 of the 12 first-place votes in balloting by media members who regularly cover the NFL.
Tennessee would be an attractive landing spot for Kelly, where he’d reunite with former OR quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Lurie told fans in an email that he decided to make a change after “evaluating the many factors involved in our performance as a team”.
Nothing is totally set and stone at this point, but all fingers are pointing to current Executive Vice President of Football Operations Howie Roseman making a return to the GM role, which would be a terrible, disgusting mistake by Jeffrey Lurie.
What sort of coach will be able to take over that roster and turn it back into a contender?
Chip Kelly made a power-play. Kelly released star wide receiver DeSean Jackson in March 2014, but the boldness was topped during this past offseason. Kelly also released Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis after Mathis skipped the voluntary portion of the offseason program.
Under Kelly’s direction, the Eagles traded LeSean McCoy, who was the franchise’s all-time leading rusher, for linebacker Kiko Alonso, who played at OR for Kelly.
Well, if Kelly has his way, it will be with an National Football League team, not college. He also traded quarterback Nick Foles and a second-round draft pick to St. Louis for Sam Bradford.
Kelly also gave big money in free agency to running back DeMarco Murray and cornerback Byron Maxwell.
For the time being, according to SB Nation, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will be the head coach and will lead this Eagles team against the Giants in the last game of the season this Sunday. Lurie clearly won’t be giving his new coach total control any time soon. “I think you either were all in, or you should find a new coach, in terms of the trust”.
Kelly’s tenure started off with an emphatic bang in Landover, MD, when the Eagles went on the road to face the reigning NFC East champion Washington Redskins. Mariota finished his freshman season with 32 touchdowns and six interceptions as OR cruised to a 12-1 record, a win in the Fiesta Bowl and a No. 2 in the final BCS rankings. So I can see why he was sacked with all the changes he made to the team which ruined the Eagles.
