Eagles Hire Doug Pederson as Head Coach
With Pederson now with the Eagles, Reid said Sunday he doesn’t anticipate losing too many members of the Chiefs coaching staff to Philadelphia.
Pederson, 47, has been the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator for the last three seasons under Andy Reid after following Reid from Philadelphia to Kansas City.
“I understand the culture and the passion of Philadelphia”, Pederson said in his introductory press conference Tuesday.
The Chiefs have scored 400 points or more in a season only eight times dating all the way back to the days of the Dallas Texans (1960), and two of those seasons have been with Pederson as offensive coordinator. “He has a lot of those personality traits that makes him likable and good with players, and that’s besides the facts of what he knows on offense and all of the schematics”. “I understand what it feels like to win in this city”. He allowed me to call the second half of every football game from that Steeler game on. I think we were literally two games from making the playoffs this year.
There’s some good news revealed in that quote. He appeared in a total of 66 regular-season games for the Packers, but he didn’t start any at QB, of course, during Favre’s consecutive games streak. After a 2014 season that saw Murray lead the National Football League in rushing yards with the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles, arguably Dallas’ fiercest divisional rival, offered Murray a big money contract to come be their primary running back.
He added, “This city, this organization hasn’t won in quite some time”.
Pederson seemed a little uncomfortable in that moment, and to be fair I think what he was getting at was that the Chiefs knew they absolutely had to score in that situation, so they were going about things in a way they felt would assure them a touchdown on that drive, but his explanation was garbage.
We’re not minimizing the skills of McNabb, who would be a legit Hall of Fame quarterback had he not spent so much time rehabbing from injuries. They carried Shula off the field for the first time since winning the Super Bowl to complete their 1972 flawless season. We were down numbers. It was time for Reid to go, but all one needs to do is look at the postseason scoreboard since Lurie moved on to Kelly in 2013.
“I would probably say that”, Reid said. “There are some pieces that we’ve got to work on and try to get back”.
Lurie obviously wouldn’t discount the comfort level he had plucking Pederson from the Reid tree, if you will. At the least it probably would have been a deflection but instead the ball bounced right to a wide open Patriots receiver for a first down.
In any case, it should be noted Pederson wasn’t necessarily the one dictating the tempo. He played it out well, I just wasn’t buying it. Reid said. “He’s been with me… when he was a player”. Or maybe not and maybe the Eagles are doomed.
