Eagles hire Pederson as new coach
The Philadelphia Daily News reports the Eagles are interested in Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo for the same position on coach Doug Pederson’s staff. That’s if they can pry him away from the Giants and new coach Ben McAdoo’s staff. Word is Spagnuolo is expected to keep his job in NY.
Pederson had been on Reid’s Kansas City staff as offensive coordinator for the past three seasons.
The reported has become the official – Doug Pederson is the new head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles settled on Pederson on Thursday, but he could not be officially hired until the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff run ended with their loss to the New England Patriots on Saturday.
Pederson will meet the media at 2 p.m. Tuesday. “He’s a great man, he knows this game and I think he’s harsh enough, offensively and defensively, and especially demanding the best out of his players”.
Pederson’s 12-year playing career also spanned time with the Browns, Packers, and Dolphins. He coached for four seasons at a high school in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Former Eagles tight end Chad Lewis recounts a story about how Pederson, who started the team’s first nine games in 1999, was relegated to backup duty, replaced by rookie Donovan McNabb.
“I said you need to surround yourself with experienced people, ” Mara said. “We worked together, I worked for him in Philadelphia, so I understand that market and that climate and that structure there”. He was humble about it. He embraced it. Privately, he was not disgruntled. Everything he said was positive.
Pederson has a strong connection to the Eagles. Just because Andy has been grooming him and teaching him doesn’t mean he’s going to be successful.
Jeffrey Lurie commented via an Eagles press release.
While a lot of people praised Lurie for firing Kelly, despite the fact the coach did go 26-21 in nearly three seasons, it was inevitable that once that brief moment of euphoria cleared, the tide was going to shift on Lurie.
