Eagles players were ‘relieved’ to hear Chip Kelly was sacked
They were eliminated from playoff contention after losing to Washington on Saturday night.
“We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward”, Lurie said in a statement.
“I wanted to make Chip accountable for everything he wanted to happen”, Lurie said. He claims that he would like to stay in the NFL.
Having said that, I absolutely don’t think that Chip Kelly should be the next head coach of the Titans, especially if Hue Jackson is available.
Kelly’s fingerprints covered the entire organization, from his control over player personnel to his to revamping of the team’s facilities, and now that he’s gone, Lurie has to rebuild the base of a decision-making core before he does anything else.
Donahoe has served as a senior adviser to the Eagles since 2012, and it’s unclear whether his increased role with the team is a permanent one. DeMarco Murray has underperformed, Sam Bradford hasn’t gotten any better than the disappointing player he was in St. Louis, and Kiko Alonso has not been the same player that almost won Rookie of the Year. And it’s the controversial moves – like drafting Matt Barkley or signing Tim Tebow – that have only shined a brighter light on Kelly’s decisions as a whole.
And Kelly used that to get control over personnel without even winning a National Championship in college!
He’s a head coach who obviously brought a different style of play to the league, giving the Eagles an up-tempo offense that never really fit the players he had on the field. But Kelly’s reputation took a hit anyway.
Former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho weighed in with an apparent subtweet: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”.
Suspended Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon tweeted: “Shady, Maclin, Foles, Djax”.
Lurie says the extra six days is important given the chaos of hiring football coaches.
However, he is considered a skilled contract negotiator and has pulled off numerous draft-day trades that have helped the Eagles turn draft picks into superior picks in later years.
Mariota’s had an inconsistent rookie season with 2,818 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while missing three games with injuries. Ninety minutes later, they announced the signing of Ryan Lindley. What it means for Indianapolis’ regular-season finale, Sunday against Tennessee, is unclear. Shurmur will coach the Eagles on Sunday, and then Lurie, Smolenski, and Roseman will conduct their second coaching search in four years. Third-stringer Charlie Whitehurst went on injured reserve Monday with an injured hamstring.
