Eagles Shock the World, Stun Patriots
The Philadelphia Eagles have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. The game saw receiver AJ Green pass 1,000 yards for the season, the fifth successive season he has achieved this mark since coming into the league. There were none, and later, when Brady threw an incomplete pass on fourth and 10 on New England’s final offensive play, Davis could disembark that elevator, enter the Eagles’ locker room, and look his players in the eye without another embarrassing performance shaming them all.
The game was tied at 14 in the second half with the Patriots in possession. It’s a quick turnaround for a team, that just two games ago, had its sights set on another flawless regular season.
LOSING STREAK: The loss was New England’s second in a row, which is a pretty rare occurrence.
That shouldn’t surprise anybody, because winning at Gillette is also, like, the hardest thing to do in the NFL.
The Patriots took a 7-0 lead on a 4-yard pass from Brady to James White on the first play of the second quarter and made it 14-0 when Brady hit Danny Amendola from 11 yards with about 5 minutes left in the half. But then Brock Osweiler and the Broncos beat New England on Sunday night, aided by some untimely fumbles and a flag or three that weren’t appreciated in the Boston area, snapping the Pats’ ideal season.
Tennessee trailed by four when quarterback Marcus Mariota was forced out of the pocket and showed off his speed, racing to the end zone on an 87-yard touchdown run to give the Titans a 35-32 lead with 8:30 left.
Carson Palmer completed 26 of 40 passes for 356 yards and two touchdowns as the Arizona Cardinals trampled the St. Louis Rams 27-3 for their sixth straight win. Philadelphia did little offensively, but it won 35-28 by scoring once on defense and twice on special teams.
Oh, and Bradford, back after missing two games with a shoulder injury, threw two touchdown passes. Gronkowski demands so much attention on defense that I doubt the Eagles’ defense would of been able to contain him.
“You’ve got a first-ballot Hall of Fame coach and a first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback – and maybe the best quarterback to ever play in this game”. New England’s second onside kick failed, but the Patriots stripped the ball from Kenjon Barner on third down to give Brady one more chance.
“I’ve always been proud of them”, Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. That came in 2002 when the Patriots lost four in a row early on – including all three games they played in October.
Only two active players – Tom Brady and Stephen Gostkowski – have been in a Patriots uniform for as long as Matthew Slater. He’s seen Belichick make several decisions like this over his years during his time in the broadcast booth, and said it was the head coach trying to take advantage of an Eagles team that hadn’t been playing up to some lofty expectations throughout the season. In fact, take away a meaningless season-ending game against Buffalo in 2014, and the Patriots went 51 weeks without losing. Brady threw touchdown passes to four different receivers.
The running back had 10 catches for 115 yards and a score, but said he left some plays out on the field.
