Eagles sign kicker Caleb Sturgis
Philadelphia Eagles kicker Cody Parkey reportedly re-aggravated a groin injury he suffered during the preseason either sometime during the Eagles game against the New York Jets this weekend or during the week of practice prior, according to a report from Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.
In his weekly “day after the game press conference”, Chip Kelly downplayed Parkey’s status. He did play in the game for us and kicked well when he was in the game but I haven’t gotten anything today in terms of in-for-treatment and what’s going on with him. All 4 of his kickoffs have been returned by the Jets.
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Eagles tryouts will include Caleb Sturgis, Nick Novak and Billy Cundiff.
“He kind of adjusted how he was kicking the ball”, Kelly said. Parkey had an MRI done Monday afternoon, something obviously made Kelly change his mind and shut Parkey down for the season.
Sturgis was the kicker in Miami the last two seasons, but lost his job to Andrew Franks this summer. Parkey went to the Pro Bowl at the end of the season and was a member of the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie team. The 23 year old is set to make a base salary of $510,000 for this year and made three of four attempted field goals, with the one miss coming against Atlanta.
