Eagles sign receiver Torrey Smith to 3-year deal
As you might have imagined, Smith doesn’t fix their wide receiver situation. Despite being signed by San Francisco in 2015, Smith has maintained a presence in Baltimore. But he had 44 catches for 749 yards and five touchdowns in 2016. Smith struggled in two years with the San Francisco 49ers, though he was severely hamstrung by that team’s quarterback issues.
Jeffery is a bona fide outside receiver who has put up good numbers in the past. The Eagles are sure to be thrilled with this signing, though.
What it means: Quarterback Carson Wentz is a happy man.
He registered 31.5 sacks and 38.5 tackles for loss in four seasons with the Eagles, including career highs in both categories, as well as an NFC-highs of 14.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss in 2014.
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie made it clear to his lieutenants early this offseason that getting Wentz capable receivers should be a priority, according to team sources. For now, their receiving depth chart is topped by Kevin White and Cameron Meredith, a pair of two-year veterans still trying to establish themselves in the National Football League and, in White’s case, stay healthy and on the field. It nearly means Nelson Agholor probably isn’t in the long-term plan- okay I can’t even type that with a straight face. Combined with Darren Sproles and second-year back Wendell Smallwood, this would give them a more reliable running attack.
Last year, he was healthy – or at least healthier – but only played in 12 games after missing Weeks 10-13 due to his suspension.
Also, will these additions change the Eagles draft strategy? Jeffery is a legitimate number one and Smith is a legitimate number two.
Torrey Smith has agreed to a three-year contract with the Eagles, the team announced Thursday. Regardless of what happens in the future, it is an exciting time to be an Eagles fan. Spotrac listed the Colts’ space at $52.8 million, enough to sign Jeffery and perhaps add more help for Luck on his offensive line.
