Eagles TE Ertz undergoes groin surgery
Dr. William Meyers is a sports hernia specialist – he is the doctor who recently performed surgery on Houston Texans running back Arian Foster’s groin. Instead, he suffered a partial groin tear. He is expected to miss the rest of the preseason, but Chip Kelly says he expects him to be ready for the regular season.
According to Ed Kracz of The Philadelphia Intelligencer, Ertz’s injury is very much like Jason Kelce’s injury a year ago.
Ertz, 24, was slow to get up after a collision in practice Wednesday.
Brent Celek has been the Eagles’ starting tight end due largely to his superior blocking ability. Kelce missed only four games, with the help of the bye week.
Chip Kelly did not reveal the medical plans for Ertz in his pre-practice press conference.
Aside from Celek, the Eagles have Trey Burton at tight end.
After this year’s draft, the Eagles signed undrafted free agent tight ends Andrew Gleichert, Eric Tomlinson and Justin Tukes.
“With each day, I get more comfortable in the offense, I get more comfortable being out there, but, as far as a huge difference from this Sunday to next Saturday, I’m not sure how big that is”, he said. With several players on the roster in need of proving themselves to Kelly and Company, those three are certainly some of them. One of the byproducts of not being able to have Zach for a couple games here in the preseason will give those guys an opportunity to see what they can do.
“Anytime you put the time in, come to training camp, work for two weeks, it’s always fun to get out there and play against someone, play real football again”, he said.
