Eagles To Interview Tom Coughlin For Head Coaching Job
Coughlin, 69, acknowledged Tuesday that he would be open to coaching again after 12 years with the Giants. He may not even be leaving the NFC East.
If Coughlin feels like he was pushed out by the Giants, and he just took the high road and stepped down first, getting to face NY twice a year as coach of the Eagles might be appealing to him.
If Bill Parcells can coach the Cowboys, it’s not that far fetched to accept the notion that Tom Coughlin could coach the Eagles.
“I met with (owners) John Mara and Steve Tisch this afternoon, and I informed them that it is in the best interest of the organization that I step down as head coach”, Coughlin said in a statement. That’s important because a coach who is fired is free to look elsewhere, but a coach who resigns would need to get permission to get out of his contract. Coughlin wants to coach, the Giants didn’t want Coughlin and the Eagles very well might.
Philadelphia has interviewed several coaches for its vacancy, including Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo.
In addition to Coughlin, the Eagles will reportedly meet with Chiefs OC Doug Pederson, Bengals DC Paul Guenther and Bucs OC Dirk Koetter (see story).
The Eagles kickstarted the National Football League firing season early, letting go of head coach Chip Kelly with two weeks left to play in the season. Sources close to the team said that the Eagles were high on Chicago Bears assistant Adam Gase, and there were reports that he was due to come in for a second interview, but not it appears he is taking his talents to South Beach instead. The Giants have already interviewed him for their job.
