Eagles will interview Coughlin on Monday
That’s not unprecedented. Last season, for example, the Atlanta Falcons waited until after the Super Bowl to hire former Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, whose team lost to the New England Patriots in the NFL’s championship game.
It was shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday when reports surfaced that the Eagles wanted to meet again with former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin about their vacancy. No further interviews are scheduled.”Pederson started the first nine games at quarterback in Andy Reid’s first season as Eagles head coach in 1999″.
And now, just 12 years after his playing career came to an end – and just eight years removed from coaching at Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport, La. – it appears the Eagles finally see in Pederson what Reid saw years ago.
Pederson has spent seven seasons coaching in the NFL.
The Eagles’ search team of owner Jeffrey Lurie, president Don Smolenski and executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman had been busy interviewing a handful of candidates for the head coaching job.
One report indicated that Coughlin and the Eagles could not agree on the makeup of his assistant coaching staff. The Eagles are believed to want to maintain four of the assistants who had worked under head coach Chip Kelly until Kelly was sacked on December 29. He met with the team in Kansas City last Sunday morning after the Chiefs beat Houston 30-0 to advance to the second round.
Pederson’s first order of business will be figuring out what to do with Philadelphia’s crowded backfield and how to remedy the rest of Kelly’s personnel decisions that ultimately did him in.
In reality it’s not fair to blame Pederson, not yet anyway, even though he’s the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator in title, for Reid’s misgivings.
“He’s a great mentor of mine, obviously, as you know”, Pederson said of Reid. He eventually returned to Philadelphia as a coach a decade later with the Eagles and followed Reid to Kansas City.
Philadelphia turned to Pederson after former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin withdrew from consideration for the Eagles’ opening, sources told Schefter. Apparently, that included turning to ex-Eagle and current ESPN analyst Ron Jaworksi, according to an interview with Philly Dot Com. Pederson was 2-7 as the starter, giving way to McNabb who became one of the top quarterbacks in franchise history. He understands defenses, what they present. A relationship between Flajole and Pederson goes back to 1998, when Pederson was the backup quarterback for the Green Bay Packers and Flajole was a defensive assistant coach.
“I’m not exactly sure what you’re talking about”.
