Ecuadorian woman falls to death in Yellowstone canyon
Record visitor numbers at the nation’s first national park have transformed Yellowstone National Park’s annual tourist rush into a sometimes unsafe frenzy.
That’s a 26 percent increase from a decade earlier, or more than 9.1 million new visitors combined at Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite and the other national parks on the list.
A Yellowstone National Park concession worker was killed Friday when she fell off a cliff overlooking the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River.
Her body was recovered about four hours later and the incident remains under investigation, the officials said.
In May, a Canadian film crew was accused of leaving an established boardwalk and stepping into a fragile geothermal area where they snapped photos and took video of themselves. Popular areas in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks were welcoming tourists Thursday for the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, but a wildfire forced some people to drive a little farther than they expected. Last month about 2,400 vehicles entered the south entrance of the Yellowstone National Park on a daily basis.

The woman’s death is part of a summer of unfortunate incidents at Yellowstone. Earlier that same month, a man visiting the park from OR fell off the Norris Geyser Basin boardwalk and also fell into a hot spring.
