Lamar’s heavy haul comes in part due to his collaborations with other artists; he was also nominated for work with the DJ Flying Lotus and with Swift herself.
The next name on the list is Taylor Swift, who has bagged a total of 7 nominations.
Swift and The Weeknd also go head-to-head for Record of the Year for “Blank Space” and “Can’t Feel My Face” respectively.
Four of the five songs featured in the Record of the Year category were expected, as they’re major hits out of T. Swift, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars and The Weeknd. Other nominees in the category, which awards the songwriter, are Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush”, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” and Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”. Stapleton additionally earned nods within the country classes of best country album, best county solo performance & best country song for the title track.
In another closely watched category, Meghan Trainor has been nominated for Best New Artist along with country singer Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly and two global artists, United Kingdom singer, songwriter James Bay, and Australian Courtney Barnett.
The Grammy awards will air live from the Staples Center on February 15 at 8 p.m., on CBS.
Best Rap Album: J. Cole, Dr. Dre, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Nicki Minaj.

A battle between upbeat, finely crafted pop and politically minded hip-hop seems to be what’s shaping up for the biggest prizes at this year’s Grammy Awards.
“To Pimp a Butterfly”, Lamar’s first album in almost three years, is unusually innovative for such a commercially anticipated album, with long sections of unaccompanied spoken word, frequent historical allusions and jazzy interludes. His debut full-length, My World 2.0, was also nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, but was beat by Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster. Mavericks’ lead singer Raul Malo, in a statement about the band’s nominations for Americana album and American Roots song. It’s the first time a country song is nominated for the top honor since the 2011 Grammys, where nominees included Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” and Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now”, which won the award. She had the biggest Grammy year of any entertainer (remember that the Grammy calendar year ends September 30 – before the Adele record came out).
