Eddie Jones: New England head coach ‘can be an angel or devil’
Jones is an Australian who led Japan to three World Cup pool stage wins.
Jones does not believe that the club-based structure in England -militates against a successful -national team.
Jones, who includes spells with Australia, South Africa and Japan on an extensive coaching CV, will meet with each of them next month to assess whether they have a role to play in his management team. “I might not get out!” Coaches are not magicians, as good ones are always quick to admit. “I have learnt that”.
As an incidental insight into the mountain of detail Jones already has at his fingertips, he was aware that Chris Robshaw has a coffee business, as he revealed when he was asked if he would treat Lancaster’s captain with sensitivity when he sits down for the chat he intends to have with him.
The RFU announced the appointment of Eddie Jones earlier this morning.
“One of the first things we have to get back is their love for the game”.
Jones has a lot of rugby to watch between now and February, and his first selection for England’s opening match in Scotland will be scrutinised and picked over by fans and pundits alike as everyone tries to determine how he want’s England to play, and whether he can bring the success that English rugby craves.
And the same goes for coaches, says Nelson, who runs the Lancashire County side and is a consultant at Rochdale Rugby Club. He isn’t afraid to upset the status quo or the establishment if he thinks they are getting in the way of the success of the team he is in charge of.
Jones wants a captain in the mould of retired New Zealand great Richie McCaw. In training they go from one drill to the next and he sprints there, he’s the first there.
“I want players who want to play for England”. You can be a devil one day and an angel the next day.
Many will be bitter and bruised and nervous about what lies ahead, especially after Matt Giteau, the great Australia utility back, tweeted: “Good choice picking Eddie Jones as England coach. Leadership is something you have to develop”. Only then will he weigh up their qualities against other contenders before deciding on the best cocktail for his coaching team, which is likely to compromise three assistants, and added specialist coaches.
Eddie Jones has been confirmed as England’s new rugby head coach following the departure of Stuart Lancaster.
“Despite all the speculation since the World Cup, and given what he achieved with Japan during RWC 2015, Eddie came to us on Wednesday with an offer from the RFU, which was simply impossible for any coach to turn down”.
“I see that as a fundamental part of the job and there’s real talent in England”, Jones said. Despite the despondency of recent weeks, the potential of a young England squad suggests Jones was right to view this job as too good to resist.
Yesterday was an occasion where renewed optimism made a decent fist of chasing post-World Cup gloom out of town. “He’s a useful player but he’s not an out-and-out open-side flanker”.
“You have to create your own unique style of play”.
The RFU’s stern rules have come under fire following England’s disastrous home World Cup campaign, with the likes of Toulon’s Steffon Armitage and Clermont Auvergne’s Nick Abendanon – winners of the European Player of the Year award over the last two seasons – unable to pull on a white shirt. You’ve got all the money in the world and all the players and you’ve still got no idea how to play the game.
