Eddie Redmayne Unconcerned About Having Four ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Films Ahead
The film should have a worldwide gross of over $200 million globally by the end of the weekend.
“Fantastic Beasts”, which opened in 4,144 theaters in the US, used the Potter brand and good reviews to propel itself to the top of the weekend box office. Thursday-night previews saw the film hauling $8.75 million.
And Eddie – who has five-month-old daughter Iris with his wife Hannah Bagshawe – is hopeful that the fans will warm to the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise as much as they did to the “Harry Potter” series.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” also played around the world, where it took $23.5 million from its global markets such South Korea, France, Australia, and Russian Federation. He noted that the film performed especially well in small to medium-sized towns across North America, and not just in the major markets. Eddie Redmayne’s latest movie is based on the Harry Potter universe, in which the Like Minds actor plays the role of Newt Scamander, a magizoologist who travels to NY with a suitcase containing odd beasts which belong to the magical world. This movie is meant to be the springboard for five more films in its genre. However, some of Scamander’s creatures that are illegal in the United States escape at a crucial time when the Magical Congress of the US is probing acts of dark forces across the country. Once in NY, however, a few of his beasts get out, leading to wonderfully choreographed and larger-than-life bits of mayhem and whimsy. Eddie Redmayne stars in the film with support coming from Colin Farrell, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, and Jon Voight.
When J.K. Rowling released Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1997, I’m sure she couldn’t imagine that her novel would turn into the franchise we all know and love today.
Two movies in their second week – the acclaimed alien invasion movie Arrival, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and the festive dramedy Almost Christmas – dropped to fourth and fifth respectively, with US$11.8 million and US$7.03 million. His direction of the film has earned him kudos from film critics.
“Fantastic Beasts” has also launched in 47 global markets, earning $23.5 million between Wednesday and Thursday. About 74 percent of the people who have watched it said that they will recommend it to their friends. I felt at times that the film wanted to play it safe and tried to appeal to all age groups.
