Edmonton Eskimos to meet Ottawa Redblacks in 103rd Grey Cup
Tiger-Cats announced Saturday that the ankle injury that sidelined receiver/returner Terrell Sinkfield Jr.in last weekend’s East semifinal against the Toronto Argonauts would keep him out of the lineup for Sunday’s division final against the host Ottawa Redblacks.
Masoli, a third-stringer forced into action due to injuries, drove the Ticats down the field and threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Luke Tasker to tie the game at 28-28.
It was the type of dramatic finish the CFL has become known for.
The Redblacks turnaround has been monumental considering the franchise is only in its second year and coming off a 2-16 season. Redblacks coach Rick Campbell watched that game on television from his home in Edmonton as his father, Hugh Campbell, coached the Eskimos to the win despite trailing 20-1 at the half. “It was like all the things in the past we let bygones be bygones and the fans did the same and we have a great memory that will be remembered for a long time, especially with that play that was made”. “You just know that the ball can come on your side of the field at any moment so you have to be on your P’s and Q’s”. He replaced Jacory Harris in the second quarter and went the rest of the way, but looked as rusty as you’d expect someone who hadn’t taken a snap to that point of the campaign. “We wanted to get some type of real estate there”. Even past year when we had our struggles the stands were always sold out.
Miller, a former Bombers fullback, entered the league in 1995, two years before 40-year-old Ottawa quarterback Henry Burris. Ellingson had five receptions for a game-high 186 yards.
On the winning second-and-25 play, Ellingson made the catch with Hamilton defender Ed Gainey falling. “He has grown immensely through his experiences… he played well enough for us to win”. “It gives the defence a lot to worry about so we’re confident in that”. They played hard, they’re well coached, they make plays.
“I think we all have a renewed confidence right now and I think he’s just never going to be a guy who would tighten up in a situation like this”, he added.
The Redblacks are, without question, the story of the year in the Canadian Football League.
Ottawa’s offense lit it up in 2015.
The REDBLACKS may be entering Sunday’s game with all the momentum, but the Ticats have their confidence back after a home win against the Argos that could be a turning point in their season.
Burris completed 9-of-14 passes for 123 yards.
On Sunday, Ottawa and Hamilton meet for the third time in four weeks.
But after his first season with the Redblacks, getting to another Grey Cup might have been the furthest thing from his mind.
“We just don’t want to stop because we’re having so much fun in here together”.
The last time the Tiger-Cats won three consecutive East Finals was from 1984 to ’86, while Ottawa’s last division title came in 1981 when the old Rough Riders beat Hamilton 17-13.
“I bet I know who that is”, said Redblacks receiver Brad Sinopoli, who played quarterback for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, playing on the same field the Redblacks beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 35-28 Sunday to earn a trip to Winnipeg and the 103rd Grey Cup.
