Edmund comes of age with dominant win over Gasquet
He will now face either American Ernesto Escobedo or Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko, giving him a very realistic chance of making round three.
Kevin Mitchell’s full report will follow shortly.
“Winning Cincinnati just shows me I am in good form but it’s an extremely tough tournament, over two weeks. I have to express myself and that’s the way I play”.
Gasquet, a three-time grand slam semifinalist and former world No. 7, was completely outplayed though the 30-year-old has struggled with a recurring back problem this summer.
Edmund’s serve and forehand were too much for an out-of-sorts Gasquet, as the 21-year-old registered his first win in a Grand Slam singles match away from Rolland Garos.
“I’m playing well, I’m feeling good on the court and conditions here, I know they suit my game”, he said.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has been known to say that the best team doesn’t always win the championship.
“The way I look at it is I am 21”. “Even though there is maybe not points in there, the experience from that will benefit me far more than the points in the long term”.
Edmund has a very realistic chance of reaching his first grand slam third round, with his only previous match against Escobar coming in a Challenger event in Birmingham a year ago.
When Edmund broke for 3-2 in the second that appeared to sap the Frenchman, who finished the second set looking decidedly sluggish. “I will watch a little bit of tape of him”.
“It’s a good opportunity”. Gasquet is the highest ranked player he has ever beaten and he will only draw more confidence from another impressive performance.
“The worst thing you can do in sport is get ahead of yourself”.
