EE British Academy Film Awards Winners Announced
“The Revenant”, the stark and brutal tale of adventure and survival, on Sunday was named outstanding film of 2015 at the British Academy Film Awards, better known as the BAFTAs. But before you bet the farm on it, keep one thing in mind: another film that tells a quintessentially American story, Boyhood, won those same awards just past year en route to a best picture loss at the Oscars.
DiCaprio, 41, overcame competition from Michael Fassbender for the movie “Steve Jobs” and Eddie Redmayne for the film “The Danish Girl” to win his first best actor award on his fourth nomination. The trophy for best actress went to the young Brie Larson, 26, for Room where she played a young mother poignant sequestered with her child.
He also paid tribute to his mother on her birthday and after the ceremony he called Kate Winslet his “home girl”.
“I am overwhelmed”, said Inarritu as he accepted the award.
George Miller’s dystopian thrill ride “Mad Max: Fury Road” took four prizes: editing, production design, costume design, and hair and makeup. Additionally, Inside Out won best animated film, Amy won best documentary, Star Wars won best visual effects and The Hateful Eight’s Ennio Morricone won best original score.
The awards gala, held here at the Royal Opera House, was hosted by Stephen Fry, and saw the presence of the who’s who of the worldwide movie industry.
Kate Winslet won the best supporting actress, her second win in the category after a gap of 20 years.
“I remember watching Tom Courtenay in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner when I was 15 years old with my father, all the way to Gary Oldman and State of Grace, which influenced an entire generation of actors”.
With the recent recognition of “The Revenant” at the BAFTA, The Wrap said that people can already conclude that it will also be a big victor during the Oscars.
Leonardo DiCaprio has won Best Actor at this year’s BAFTAs.
And talking to members of the press, including Us Weekly, after he received his award, DiCaprio said he was genuinely surprised.
Brooklyn won the first prize of the night, after being named outstanding British film.
The best British short film honour went to Operator, a movie funded by Kickstarter and helmed by Caroline Bartleet while best short animation went to Edmond.
Asif explained: ‘We really fell in love with her when making the film.
