Egypt’s military spokesman says 7 soldiers killed in Sinai
A group linked to the self-proclaimed Islamic State organisation has claimed it carried out attacks in Egypt’s Sinai region which killed five members of the security forces on Saturday.
Reports of Egyptian military casualties in the early-July attacks varied from 17 to 60 killed, while officials say more than 100 of the militants died.
Recent tough crackdown measures had already neutralized numerous country’s enemies, particularly the mainstream militant Muslim Brotherhood.
The attack came days after the recent wave of terrorist attacks in North Sinai and other provinces, including capital Cairo. The Egyptian naval vessel was located near Israel’s and the Gaza Strip’s coast.
In the past two weeks, the Egyptian army, which regained control over the town on the same day after fierce battles, has been carrying out intense strikes against militant hideouts which reportedly left more than 200 militants dead.
Four insurgents in another raid including a dreaded terrorist named “Ahmed Gamal Salem”, got captured near Um Shehan village in North Sinai.
According to Samir, the army destroyed two land cruisers and killed the militants inside it in Al-Hamdeya area south of Sheikh Zuwayed.
The group has been on the rise since the military overthrew Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in July 2013, and has killed at least 600 police and armed forces personnel since then.
