Egypt Stops Hamas Commandos From Linking Up With Iran
Zahar denied reports that there was progress in talks with Israel to bring about a long-term truce between Hamas in Gaza and the Jewish State.
The 28-year-old man was identified only by the initials N.A. And no other details on the accusations against him were provided by Hamas, the Islamist movement that rules the Palestinian territory which has seen three wars with Israel in six years. He added that various global parties have been making serious efforts to reach an agreement between Hamas and Israel that would be compatible with the latter’s conditions.
“The question is how to resolve the Gaza problem?”
Since 2007, the Gaza Strip has groaned under a tight blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt that has deprived the coastal enclave’s nearly two million inhabitants of basic commodities including food, fuel and medicine. “If there were a passage open between the West Bank and Gaza we’d definitely use it, but why shouldn’t we open another one for the people of Gaza?” said Hassan Yousef.
Although Israeli officials claim it is merely a rumor and that there are no direct or indirect negotiations with Hamas, many signs suggest that a deal is imminent.
“There are mediators who are doing their utmost to reach this agreement”, he said.
Former UK prime minister Tony Blair invited Hamas officials to London to discuss the long term truce, but Zahar refused his request, telling Al Aqsa that talks of Hamas nearing a ceasefire with Israel were “lies that have no basis in reality”.
Since 2007, Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank have been under the control of the rival administrations of Hamas and Fatah, respectively.
Negotiations are allegedly underway for the release of the four Hamas members.
He said that the nuclear agreement between Iran and the West will not affect Iran’s stance towards the Palestinian issue.
