Election coverage a bit too serious? TV had lighter options
The “Late Show” host speaks to the state of America after Tuesday night’s election results. “I was definitely, absolutely voting for his husband and no one else, especially not Hillary Clinton #ImWithHer”, she said.
As the special, drained of humor, continued past its scheduled ending, a sober Colbert – despite the alcohol – stood at his desk and gave a moving, off-the-cuff speech about the election. You can check out the full video from The Late Show below.
“So I don’t have to vote?” the little girl asks. Things may look awful right now, but Colbert believes this could be a turning point for America in a positive way.
The little girl, clearly not old enough to vote, began her skit by sobbing and singing, “I’m too scared to vote”.
“He’s worse!” Stewart and Colbert say unison to thunderous applause from the studio audience.
“Are you serious? That angry tac-and-draft dodging little orange groundhog is running for president?”
Clearly, both comedians feel pretty strongly about the matter, considering the fact that Colbert let Stewart spit water in his face (twice) to make the point.
“By every metric, we are more divided than ever as a nation”, he said. In what has clearly been one of the most freaky and divisive elections in our nation’s history, Colbert looked into the camera and got serious with America….until he decided it was time to get amusing. So I’m with her because I believe in where we are, and where we are going to go.
On an unexpected election night at the end of a bitter campaign season, Stephen Colbert called out for unity. She is very good at this impression, so maybe you need something like this right now. “Perhaps something worse than this will happen to me one day!” But in comedy, specificity is key-and, at least Monday night, Colbert and Stewart seemed to have lost hold of that truth.
Watch the quintessentially 2016 clip below, hopefully while you’re, you know, in line to vote. It all amounted to a surreal bit, but the message was simple: Go and vote, goddamnit.
