Election results capture attention of readers
The presidential election results are still the same.
Trump easily won the Electoral College, but Clinton is leading the popular vote by almost 2 million people, according to recent counts.
Already, statistics show that Hillary leads Trump in popular votes, by over 2 million votes. As one who voted for Clinton, let me plead with people to stop demonstrating.
Clinton allies were apparently hoping she would wait for a miracle turnaround in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania – three states where Green Party candidate Jill Stein is seeking recounts. Until the 12th Amendment, electors could vote for any two candidates, which led in 1796 to the election of a president (John Adams) and a vice president (Thomas Jefferson) from different parties.
This year, Mrs Clinton scored large tallies in states like California but Mr Trump won most of the so-called swing states, which ultimately decide the outcome of elections. But in 2012, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney would have picked up more Electoral College votes than President Barack Obama, despite losing the state’s popular vote. Gore won 547,398 votes more than Bush nationwide – about half a percent more.
“I believe strongly that in a democracy, we should respect the will of the people, and to me that means it’s time to do away with the Electoral College, and move to the popular election of our president”, Clinton declared.
Even Trump has criticized the Electoral College.
The official totals are 2,279,543 votes for Republican Donald Trump, and 2,268,839 for Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Other delegates felt that giving Congress the power to select the president would deny the people their right to choose. The Michigan vote was posted by the secretary of state on November 23.
“Donald Trump is nobody’s fool – he is a smart guy”, Mr. Sanders said.
“We are a country based on laws, and we’ve had hot, contested elections going back to the very beginning”, Clinton said, before the voting.
In the constituencies where the voting was electronic, Hillary received 7% les votes than where the residents voted through a paper ballot.
“This suggests that at least some Republicans think they’re more likely to lose the Electoral College votes in Virginia in the years to come”, Farnsworth said of Cole’s bill.
The Electoral College loophole has been ignored since the early decades of the nation, when Electoral College delegates took their roles as independent electors more literally.
