Electric Aston Martin Rapide to Debut in 2017
Aston Martin announced last week it was planning “meaningful” job cuts as part of a restructuring that would involve the company expanding into electric and “crossover” sport utility vehicles.
Confirmation of an electric Aston Martin Rapide comes on the back of Palmer’s belief that in the future, the entire automotive industry will shift to electric cars.
The British luxury auto company tentatively plans to release the electric Rapide sometime in late 2017, reported CarScoops Magazine. With Spectre on the horizon, James will be droving the new Aston Martin DB10.
“It’s an awfully good getaway vehicle”, Palmer said.
“The upper limit of affected positions is 295”, the company said in a statement, adding that the planned cuts would make the company “more efficient and appropriately resourced”. Project that into the future. God forbid. You’ve got to do something radical. “I don’t think James really cares what the power train is as long it’s fast and attractive”.
“Electric power gives us the performance we want, although you won’t have a V12 noise – you’ll have something that works just as well for a luxury vehicle – silence”.
The British carmaker has also hinted that the electric Rapide won’t be the only “green” model to join the range and will be followed by the production version of the DBX crossover, which was previewed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.
Looking to what Aston Martin could achieve with an all-electric platform, like that used by Tesla in the Model S and new Model X cars, Palmer said: “We’re talking about an electric Aston Martin with between 800 and 1,000 horsepower. It gives you that torque”.
