Electrical blast in Los Angeles leaves 12 buildings in dark
About 160 firefighters arrived on scene and the blaze was quickly extinguished.
The Los Angeles Fire Department says the blast occurred shortly after 10:15 p.m. Thursday in an underground part of a 19-story building.
The Department of Water and Power was handling local electrical service issues while also working to dewater the flooded basement.
Although there was widespread damage, fears about the structural integrity of the building were “unfounded”, according to LAFD. He said the building’s power generator is located on a parking structure across an alley from the building. The building was red-tagged since the explosion made the electrical and fire-safety systems inoperable.
The cause of the blast and the subsequent outages remains under investigation. Two other injured parties were checked at the scene but declined treatment, Humphrey said.
Crews consider they will restore energy to all of the buildings Friday besides the one the place the explosion occurred, company spokeswoman Terry Schneider stated.
Arena officials say the explosion briefly paused a Shania Twain concert at nearby Staples Center.
Four adults suffered non-life threating injuries, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Brian Humphrey.
The building in the downtown business district is home to offices, a bar, a restaurant and a nightclub.
The 119,000-square-foot building was largely unoccupied due to the time of the blast, he said.
