Will this season be the end of the historic Manning era in NY? Weigh in on the decision and what it means for the Giants’ future at quarterback. At 2-9, the Giants have no chance at making the playoffs and the team has 19 players on injured reserve. Manning’s future in NY is in doubt.
The news is notable in light of Manning’s extraordinary longevity as the Giants starting quarterback, as well as the controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick’s apparent continued blackballing from the league.
Does it matter that it’s not his fault?
Manning has just 14 touchdowns this year, compared to seven interceptions.
Of course, it’s not a sure thing that this is the end of his Giants career.
“Geno will start this week”, McAdoo said, according to Michael Eisen of NFL.com. To say the 36-year-old and two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback was emotional is an understatement. When asked about the benching Tuesday, he struggled to get the words out.

In 2017, they are circling the drain in 2017, and they sit two games ahead of Cleveland for the NFL’s worst record and one game ahead of San Francisco for the second-worst record.
“I have said it many times, I want to play, I want to compete, I want to be out there for my teammates to help them prepare to win”, Manning said.
It’s been a lost year for the Giants.
McAdoo said his plan is to start Smith against Oakland and have Manning serve as the backup.
With Smith at the helm, it will be the first game since 2004 that the Giants started without Manning under center. Once a team with Super Bowl aspirations, NY has stumbled to a 2-9 record which included a five-game losing streak to start the season. There had been some hints Eli Manning would be benched, but it’s not like Geno Smith or rookie Davis Webb represent an upgrade with an injury-thinned wide receiver group and a mostly bad offensive line making a quarterback’s job hard.
