Elizabeth Warren: Economic Inequality Just Part of Racial Justice Fight
Tamir Rice was a 12-year-old shot by police in Cleveland, Ohio.
Catalyzed by the police shooting of Michael Brown last summer and the unrest in Ferguson, Mo. that resulted, the Black Lives Matter movement has extended its efforts beyond city streets and into campaign events. The women, co-founders of the Seattle chapter of Black Lives Matter, took over the microphone and refused to relinquish it. Sanders eventually left the stage without speaking and instead waded into the crowd to greet supporters. We must be honest: Fifty years after John Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke out, violence against African Americans has not disappeared. She connected that fight to issues of economic and social justice, including voter suppression, stagnating wages, housing discrimination and predatory banking practices. Why does Black Lives Matter seek to disrupt the Twin Cities Marathon?
Leaders of the movement say they plan to prevent runners from completing the 26-mile run.
Congresswoman Jackson Lee presented the loudest form of support toward the Movement.
I hope that Elizabeth Warren’s speech about the persistent and debilitating effects of institutional racism in America becomes required reading in classrooms and colleges across the country, because the Massachusetts senator is likely the first federal politician to articulate the aims and urgency of the Black Lives Matter movement and the insidious effects systematic racism has on African American communities today. “It engenders a diverse, generational movement”.
Civil rights, asserted Warren, introduced new laws that ensured that, “Black lives matter”.
Judge Greg Mathis, who starred in his own nationally-syndicated court show, also chimed in. He says that the specifics of the plan will depend on what measures police and race officials put in place on the day of the event. “The tools of oppression were woven together, and the civil rights struggle was fought against that oppression wherever it was found – against violence, against the denial of voting rights and against economic injustice”. The story quotes local Black Lives Matter “spokesman” Rashad Turner.
“The police are as much a part of the community as your neighbors are”, said Demings. And it’s not just about law enforcement either.
“Black men are viewed as economic commodities”, said Congressman Jeffries.
But then, Republicans’ trickle-down economic theory arrived. The TC Marathon parent organization donates significant time and money to help ALL our children to develop healthy habits and being active. “As a matter of fact it is not broken; it is created to work just as it does today”. Sandra Bland. Freddie Gray.
“We want to be sure that the wheels of justice turn and are not stopped”, said Cummings. Voting. And what about economic injustice?
Will the Black Lives Matter crowd be dissuaded? “But that doesn’t happen if Black folks don’t vote”.
Oliver said a few of the runners in this race sympathize with the Black Lives Matter cause. But by the time I read the seventh reference to Peterson’s abundant progeny, it was clear that Powers had once again stayed too long at the dance.
But the civil rights movement pushed this country in a new direction. “For African-Americans, who were so far behind earlier in the 20th century, this means that since the 1980s they have been hit particularly hard”, Warren said.
“What she was saying is we don’t have to [understand] and that her peers need to believe the folks who’ve been saying for years that their communities are hurting in these particular ways”, Yancey said. Other panelists answered that White-on-White crime has never been addressed either, and that the issue of Intraracial violence should be addressed. “Black-on-Black crime is being used as a distraction”.
Yancey said that message is very important for broader audiences.
