Ellen’s Usain Bolt tweet deemed racist
Here’s a look at the conflicting social media reactions to DeGeneres’ tweet.
Ellen DeGeneres has sent out a tweet about the Usain Bolt meme she posted earlier in the week, which has been called out for being insensitive and racist. Which attracted lots of criticism as to her being a racist.
But while some Twitter users slammed DeGeneres on the social media site, others rushed to her defense amid the controversy, claiming that the Usain meme was harmless and was not meant to cause controversy.
People on Twitter quickly responded to the edited photograph with disdain, saying that the image has “ugly connotations” and lamenting that the edited photo seems to equate Bolt with “a common mule”.
The tweet prompted immediate backlash from many users who said the image was racist for showing a white woman riding on the back of a black man. The youngster acts as a personal trainer for other kids and told the talk show host he believed he could beat the champion in a race.
“Oh my GAWD Ellen Degeneres is the last person on earth to post a racist meme”.
The original post remains on DeGeneres’ Twitter account.
Did YOU think the joke was offensive, or are people just overreacting?
On Tuesday morning, the Twitter account tweeted: “I am highly aware of the racism that exists in our country”.
