Emergency was an attack on india s democratic tradition pm modi
Perhaps Jayaprakash Narayan’s iconic status in Bihar was on Narendra Modi’s political radar as he paid eloquent tributes to the Loknayak this morning when the BJP and the government made a decision to go big with a commemorative function on JP’s 113th birth anniversary.
Meanwhile, talking about media freedom during Emergency, PM Modi said that we don’t want to remember Emergency to criticize someone. Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured 16 persons, including Subramanian Swamy and four sitting governors, for stoutly “defending democracy” during the Emergency era on the birth anniversary of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan on Sunday. Modi lauded the JP movement saying that it paved way for a new kind of politics in India. The leadership born during the Emergency was not one meant for TV studios. “He was not confined to one ideology or one thought”. Throughout his life he always supported truth and spent his life following what he felt was right, he added. He also highlighted the fact that the country people should not feel bad or discouraged when they hear or remember about emergency, while rather they should think how the anti-Emergency movement reinforced the country’s democratic system. “It was a leadership committed to live and die for the nation”.
“The J.P. movement, the anti-corruption movement, the fight against Emergency after 25 years of Independence was an occasion…” “So many people in politics today owe their initial days to those days of Emergency and the JP movement”.
Mr. Modi honoured 14 political veterans who had fought the Emergency.
Earlier, Mr. Modi met former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former NDA convener George Fernandes who had played a crucial role in the struggle against the Emergency.
“Media should not let the country forget Emergency”.
The event was also attended by Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal, LK Advani, and Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu. He praised Nanaji for bearing the bullet on his body which could lead to JP Narayan’s death.
