Emily Blunt, Josh Gad and other celebs react to Brangelina
In her latest film she plays an alcoholic divorcee who is battling the heartbreak of failed fertility treatment.
The 33-year-old Brit, who is mother to two babies with husband John Krasinski, refuses to cause a fuss about how other people parent their children amid what she believes is a growing social phenomenon surrounding mothers who team up to criticise the way other women raise their kids.
“It’s just to do something else and something incredibly damaged and unsettling”, the actress said on the train track-themed carpet at the film’s London premiere on Tuesday.
Speaking at the world premiere in London’s Leicester Square, Blunt said: “I think there is a huge societal pressure on women when it comes to motherhood, this sort of mummy cult that goes on”.
“They’ve done their best, I mean to sort of make her look a bit s**t, but you know.” she told the Daily Mail.
“In the domestic world is where I think women can be quite cruel about each other, more so than any other environment”, she continues.
After a wash of monochromatic gowns on the Emmys red carpet, Blunt’s bold patterned look was a welcome refresh that also seemed on trend given the maximalist moment the industry has seen on the runways at NY and London Fashion Weeks.
Her casting was met by cries of “But she’s too pretty!” from fans of the book but, until now, Hawkins has kept mum on the issue.
The role is hardly a transformation for Blunt, who simply dyed her hair a mousy brown for the film.
“Everybody moans about, “Oh, she’s too lovely to play Rachel”, and she is (too beautiful)”.
The Girl on the Train is set for United Kingdom cinema release on October 5.
