Series nine of Doctor Who airs on September 19 on BBC One at 7.40pm.
During this electrifying new 12-part series, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) is joined by Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) for time travel on a cinematic scale.

Synopsis: In a backwater of history, in a little Viking village where all the warriors have just been slaughtered, a young girl called Ashildr is about to make a desperate mistake. However, as this first adventure begins, it will seem the Time Lord has gone missing – which is bad news for Earth, as a alien force has frozen the skies. But where is the Doctor, and what is he hiding from? “So long as it’s not the Doctor and Clara”.
“The Doctor, who is my best friend, is not only in a different body, but he’s also getting to know himself”, she says.
The BBC teases: ‘Trapped and alone in a terrifying Dalek city, the Doctor is at the heart of an evil Empire; no sonic, no TARDIS, nobody to help. And will there be mercy?’
But if you were hoping that this format will ever be used in the hit BBC family sci-fi series, Doctor Who, you are about to be bitterly disappointed…. A lot of times when people take on iconic characters, including Doctor Who, theres an intense amount of pressure around the persons performance from the fanbase, so none of this is particularly shockingespecially considering Who is popular worldwide but is still subjected to ratings pressures from the likes of The X Factor in the UK.
It’s the one everyone’s been waiting for – Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams makes her debut in the show.
A lot has been made of the relationship between the Doctor and his assistant, given that in the last series their relationship was really put through its paces. “I don’t yet feel that I know how to do this”. Also confirmed for guest appearances are Rebecca Front, Rufus Hound, Paul Kaye, Joivan Wade and Sophie Stone. So why is she back in this new prologue? I think it was when they threw a rubber spider in my face and said, Fight it! However is River a big enough draw to pull viewers back to Doctor Who? I try not to be too romantic or sentimental.
League Of Gentlemen’s Reece Shearsmith is the guest star for this episode. “Quite who the Doctor is remains mysterious to me – which is of course as it should be”.
