Emmys 2015: The Daily Show wins Outstanding Variety Talk Series for its
Pundits had wondered whether the Emmys might honor “Colbert”, which has gone off the air as its host moved to CBS earlier this month, or even HBO’s freshman series “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”, anchored by another Stewart protege. “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there”. In addition to the overall award, the show claimed the Emmy for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series.
Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor, considered a front-runner for the best comedy actor prize, would earn the first Emmy for portrayal of a transgender character. The show had previously won 10 Emmys in the category. It also won for directing.
When a reporter from Time Warner Cable asked Jon Stewart a question, the former Daily Show host blurt out “Time Warner Cable, you mother (expletive)!”
Up for the award this year were the final seasons of both The Colbert Report, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and one of the most beloved shows in late night history, Late Show with David Letterman. A smiling Martin was in the theatre audience to accept the congratulations, and was onstage for the big win.
As for his future plan, Jon Stewart gave little clues as to what they might be, Variety reported.
“This is nuts”, said Tony Hale, thanking his show’s writers and lauding his fellow nominees: “You make me laugh hard”.
King of “American Crime” won supporting actress honours for a limited series.
The freshman Amazon series is a contender for best comedy honours, and a victory would make it the first online program to capture top series honours.
Appearing on stage, groomed, Samberg touched briefly on the political scene.
