Emmys: Viola Davis makes history; HBO scores
Bill Murray won outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or a film for his role in the show but was not there to collect the gong.
After eight tries, Jon Hamm finally won his first Emmy for his now-iconic role as the hard-drinking, womanizing Don Draper on “Mad Men“, which finished its triumphant run last spring on AMC.
The slyest remark about a would-be great series was delivered when Samberg reminded viewers they had said good-bye this season to beloved series including “Mad Men” and “Parks and Recreation”, and also to “True Detective” (the HBO drama suffering a critically lambasted second season) even though, as he observed, it’s “still on the air”.
An emotional Davis, who won for her portrayal of a ruthless lawyer in “How to Get Away With Murder“, invoked the words and spirit of 19th-century African-American abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
“If you had told me as a small child growing up in England”, said Cordon said in mock-wonder, that he would grow up to present to Emmy’s audience of millions this august trio from the Ernst & Young accounting firm, “I would have said, ‘Sod off!” “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” won for best writing, outstanding variety talk show and directing.
“HBO has the most nominations tonight, and I just realized that a lot of you watching at home may not have an HBO subscription”, Samberg says during the ceremony.
On the comedy side, political satire “Veep” claimed the top series award that had gone to “Modern Family” for five consecutive years. “Veep” also clinched the comedy writing statuette.
However it looks, it gives you a free trial of HBO programming.
Transparent creator Jill Soloway received a standing ovation from Tambor and co-star Gaby Hoffmann as she was named outstanding director for a comedy series. People who in my life have gotten me here.
The Emmy for lead actor in a comedy series has been awarded to Jeffrey Tambor of “Transparent”.
If HBO wasn’t in on the joke, it is at least playing along on social media. The actress was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited series/movie for her role in The Honorable Woman.
Janney’s first four Emmys came for her work on “The West Wing“.
The video mocked the massive amounts of television now and audiences’ struggled to keep up, locking Samberg in a bunker for a year while he got caught up.
Samberg then did a brief monologue in which he cracked jokes about diversity in Hollywood, Paula Deen on “Dancing With the Stars” and – perhaps inevitably – presidential candidate Donald Trump.
