In the category for best actress in a drama, apart from Blanchett and Mara, Brie Larson was nominated for her portrayal of a mother held captive with her young son in “Room”, and Alicia Vikander earned a nod for her role alongside Eddie Redmayne in “The Danish Girl”, a film about transgender pioneer Lili Elbe.
The N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” got a boost on Wednesday when it was included among the Screen Actors Guild Award nominees for best ensemble drama.
Todd Haynes 1950s romance “Carol” landed a leading five nominations, including best dramatic picture.

In-demand Fassbender is in the running for Best Performance by an actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in “Steve Jobs”. The actresses, both in their 70’s, represent an age group whose stories are rarely told in films, and the oversight stings. Along with Elba and Rylance, the supporting actor category was rounded out by Paul Dano (“Love & Mercy”) and Michael Shannon (“99 Homes”).
Premium rival Showtime suffered a falloff, too, with last year’s nine nominations shrinking to three.
Overall, Netflix dominated the TV network list with eight nominations, surpassing HBO and Starz, thanks to series “Narcos” and “Orange is the New Black”. Gaga, who played Countess Elizabeth on the Ryan Murphy created series tweeted.
“The Martian” is first and foremost a sci-fi adventure, but it’s at least peppered throughout with humor from Drew Goddard’s script. “Joy”, is no sure nominee, even in comedy, but it’s in the more awkward position of not really containing any comedy.
Nominees for the best actress in a TV series- drama also include Caitriona Balfe (‘Outlander’), Eva Green (‘Penny Dreadful’) and Robin Wright (‘House of Cards’).
Also nominated in the best television drama series are “Mr Robot”, “Narcos” and “Outlander”.
