England Captain Wayne Rooney Retires From International Competition
Rooney met with Gareth Southgate earlier in the week to discuss taking part in England’s upcoming games against Malta and Slovakia, but politely turned down the call-up in favour of bowing out and giving somebody else a crack at it.
Former United teammate Gary Neville asked, ‘Wazza how sweet was it to score at the Etihad?’ To which Rooney said “What.again?”
“If I was the manager I’d try to convince him to delay it until after the World Cup. Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful”, he said.
‘I think we both have a good chance, ‘ he said.
The England global has become only the second footballer to rack up that many goals in England’s top flight, joining Newcastle United legend, Alan Shearer. But the 31-year-old, who scored on his home debut against Stoke City last week, gave another display of clever passing and positioning as well as his trademark finishing.
“It’s been a great start at Everton and the way to keep that going is to have breaks, there are two or three before Christmas and one afterwards”. I really appreciated that. He came fifth in the vote for the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or and was named in the FIFPro World 11 for 2011.
In the England Wayne Rooney scored a record 53 goals, and also played 119 matches, conceding on this indicator only goalkeeper Peter Shilton (125 games).
Even Rooney loved the photograph, and the player posted the picture with a caption aimed at trolling Manchester City fans. England now sit top of Group F with 14 points, while Malta are bottom with no points at all yet. We didn’t do enough as a squad.
“I prefer to win the game but there is nothing to say, a see a lot of these games last season”.
“It’s been lonely in this Premier League 200 club”.
“Well, it is not bad for someone who is not fit any more and can’t get about the pitch”, he told Sky Sports.
On a day when the former Manchester United captain announced he would not play for England any more, Clarke said: “It marks the end of an era in worldwide football”.
“That’s as a squad, not just Wayne, and I was involved in a couple of those tournaments”. We never would have guessed. The thing for me is to play.
“I’m not going to talk [about] the referees, please…it’s so clear, so I don’t want to talk with the referee”. Sometimes that happens, it is all about timing. I’ve scored a few times here.
