England cricket: Trevor Bayliss hints at batting shake-up
But there been concerns about the viability of the fixtures, the first leg of an England tour programme that features a subsequent Test series in India, ever since 29 people were killed in a terror attack in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, last month.
His average of just above 27 means the jury is very much out on his future, especially after a wretched Test at The Oval in which he could make only 18 runs in two innings, dropped a straightforward chance at gully and earned himself a £1,500 fine – and England’s disapproval – for marching up to the third umpire’s room to confront the official about his dismissal to a controversial low catch.
Pakistan’s achievement is all the more impressive as they have not played a Test series on home soil since an armed attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore in 2009 turned the country into a no-go area for the world’s leading Test nations.
“I think it will get down to the number of runs, and whether he deserves to be in the team”. An alarming change in the shorter forms came about in the past 12 months, but in the five-day game they are still trying to find the right balance in their batting order beyond Alastair Cook and Joe Root, although Johnny Bairstow and Moeen Ali have papered over cracks.
“I kept telling the team that we have to follow the example of great teams who never look behind and keep working hard and that’s what we did”, he said. “Similarly in batting, I was really pleased with Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq that they proved about having the ability to score in any conditions”, added Miandad.
‘They’ve been spoken to because it was silly really, ‘ said Bayliss.
“It will get down to who is out there who can take their places – are they ready to play Test cricket, have they got what it takes?” he asked.
Chris Woakes, the breakout star with for the hosts, was named England’s player of the series after picking up 26 wickets at a tick under 17 and chipping in with 177 runs at 35.
Bayliss has also laid down the challenge to anyone aspiring from county cricket to replace those in situ, and will be taking account of all runs scored in the remaining Specsavers County Championship matches.
But while Bayliss offered an incentive to county batsman, he also suggested that the gap between domestic and worldwide cricket had grown to such an extent that performances in the County Championship might not be an especially accurate gauge of a player’s likely success at the higher level.
England must decide whether to move on, but compelling new candidates are thin on the ground. There doesn’t seem to be anyone crying out to be selected above anyone else.
“There’s a number of guys we’ve seen score some runs earlier this season, under a bit of scrutiny when their names are mentioned about the possibility of getting into the team. Some of them have dropped off”, Bayliss said.
Bayliss was also frustrated by England’s fielding. ‘I’d be confident at this stage Jonny can carry on doing both, ‘ said Bayliss.
Hales has been retained in the one-day worldwide series squad, with the first of five matches in the 50-over format due to take place in Southampton next Wednesday.
Before then England will announce a squad on Tuesday morning for five ODIs against Pakistan – starting next week.
Pakistan skipper Misbahul Haq is the latest voice to speak out in support of England touring Bangladesh, warning of the damage that the country may suffer if England call of their upcoming tour in October due to security fears.
